USE WITH CAUTION

Avoid regular alcohol use with atorvastatin โ€” both are processed by the liver and together can increase the risk of liver damage and muscle problems.

Atorvastatin also sold as: Lipitor

Is it safe to take Atorvastatin with Alcohol?

Atorvastatin (Lipitor) is a statin taken long-term to reduce cholesterol and protect the heart. Alcohol is processed by the liver, as is atorvastatin. Regular or heavy drinking increases the risk of the rare but serious statin side effects of liver damage and muscle breakdown (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Occasional light drinking is generally considered acceptable, but you should discuss your alcohol intake with your prescribing doctor.

How do Atorvastatin and Alcohol interact?

Atorvastatin is metabolised by CYP3A4 in the liver. Alcohol induces CYP3A4 with chronic use and may also deplete the CoQ10 that cells need for energy production (reducing muscle cells' defences against statin-induced myopathy). Both drugs also increase liver enzyme levels independently. Combined, the hepatotoxic and myopathic risks of atorvastatin may be amplified.

Who should be careful?

Anyone on statins who drinks more than 14 units/week. Those with any pre-existing liver condition must discuss alcohol use with their doctor before taking statins.

What if I've already taken Atorvastatin and Alcohol?

Occasional light drinking is generally low risk with atorvastatin. If you notice unexplained muscle pain, weakness or dark urine, stop atorvastatin and contact your GP as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink alcohol while taking atorvastatin?

Light drinking (1-2 units occasionally) is generally considered acceptable. Regular or heavy drinking increases the risk of liver problems and muscle damage (myopathy) with statins.

Can statins and alcohol damage your liver?

Both atorvastatin and alcohol can affect the liver. Together, particularly with heavy regular drinking, they increase the risk of elevated liver enzymes and, rarely, liver damage.

Does alcohol affect how atorvastatin works?

Heavy drinking can affect how the liver processes atorvastatin, potentially altering its blood levels and increasing side effect risk. Light drinking is unlikely to significantly affect efficacy.

What are the signs of statin-related muscle problems?

Unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness โ€” especially if accompanied by dark (cola-coloured) urine. Stop atorvastatin and contact your GP immediately if you notice these.
