Can You Take Levofloxacin with Alcohol?
Last reviewed: ยท Source: US FDA drug label database
Avoid alcohol with levofloxacin โ alcohol impairs recovery and may compound levofloxacin's risks of tendon damage and CNS side effects.
Is it safe to take Levofloxacin with Alcohol?
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for serious respiratory and urinary infections. Alcohol impairs immune function at exactly the time your body needs to fight a serious infection. Additionally, fluoroquinolones are associated with tendon damage and CNS effects (dizziness, confusion), which alcohol can worsen. Heavy alcohol use is also a risk factor for the rare but serious tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolones.
How do Levofloxacin and Alcohol interact?
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and is renally cleared. Alcohol does not significantly alter levofloxacin pharmacokinetics, but contributes to CNS-related side effects and may worsen tendon damage risk (fluoroquinolones impair collagen synthesis; alcohol also has negative effects on connective tissue). Both alcohol and fluoroquinolones can lower the seizure threshold.

Who should be careful?
Athletes and active individuals (tendon risk). Those with existing liver or kidney disease. Those on corticosteroids (already increase fluoroquinolone tendon risk). Anyone with a history of seizures.
What if I've already taken Levofloxacin and Alcohol?
Complete the antibiotic course. If you notice unusual joint or tendon pain, particularly in the Achilles tendon, stop levofloxacin and contact your GP immediately. Report any seizures as an emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drink on levofloxacin?
Best avoided. Alcohol impairs immune function and may worsen fluoroquinolone side effects including dizziness and tendon damage risk.
Can levofloxacin and alcohol cause a seizure?
Both fluoroquinolones and alcohol can lower the seizure threshold. The combination may increase seizure risk in predisposed individuals.
Why do fluoroquinolones warn about tendons?
Fluoroquinolones including levofloxacin can damage tendons, particularly the Achilles tendon. This is a rare but serious side effect. Alcohol and corticosteroids both increase this risk.
How long does levofloxacin stay in your system?
Levofloxacin has a half-life of 6-8 hours. After a typical 5-7 day course, it is mostly cleared within 2-3 days.
