Naproxen in Pregnancy — Is It Safe?

🔴
AVOID THIS COMBINATION

Avoid naproxen in pregnancy — like all NSAIDs it risks fetal kidney and heart complications, especially from 20 weeks onwards.

Naproxen also sold as: Aleve, Naprosyn, Feminax Ultra

Is it safe to take Naproxen with Pregnancy?

Naproxen carries the same pregnancy risks as ibuprofen. From 20 weeks it can reduce amniotic fluid by affecting fetal kidneys, and in the third trimester it can cause the fetal ductus arteriosus to close prematurely, damaging the baby's heart and lungs. Paracetamol is the recommended painkiller throughout pregnancy. Women using naproxen for period pain should stop once pregnant or trying to conceive.

How do Naproxen and Pregnancy interact?

Naproxen inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. Fetal renal prostaglandins maintain urine output and amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios risk after 20 weeks); ductal prostaglandins keep the ductus arteriosus open (premature constriction risk after 28 weeks). Naproxen's long half-life makes sustained fetal exposure more likely than shorter-acting NSAIDs.

Who should be careful?

All pregnant women and those trying to conceive. Women who took naproxen before a positive test should mention it to their midwife — very early exposure is lower risk.

What if I've already taken Naproxen and Pregnancy?

A dose taken before you knew you were pregnant is unlikely to cause harm — do not take more, switch to paracetamol, and inform your midwife. If naproxen was taken after 20 weeks, your midwife may arrange a fluid check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take naproxen while pregnant?

No — avoid it throughout pregnancy, strictly from 20 weeks. Paracetamol is the safe alternative.

I took Feminax before I knew I was pregnant — is my baby OK?

Very early one-off exposure is low risk. Stop now, use paracetamol instead, and mention it at your booking appointment.

What can I take for period-type cramps in early pregnancy?

Paracetamol, warmth, and rest. Cramping with bleeding in pregnancy should always be checked by a midwife or GP.

When after birth can I take naproxen again?

Naproxen is generally compatible with breastfeeding in occasional doses, but check with your midwife or pharmacist first.
